First Response Emergency Care (RQF)
Level 4

Once you are able to combine the theoretical knowledge of FREC 3 with a lot of practical experience, we can also offer the next step up: FREC 4. It’s 5 full days, typically spread over a few weeks and gives leaners more advanced skills. Topics include the management of major incidents, mental health and sepsis. It gives a greater awareness of injuries and illnesses affecting children, as well as sexual assault. You will also learn how to use Entonox for pain relief and how to measure the key clinical observations which show whether patient care should be escalated. By attending this course you will be better placed to support – but not to carry out - more advanced clinical interventions such as intubation, cannulation or intra-osseous drugs. This course is endorsed by the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care, which is part of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The national regulations mean that it is open only to people aged 18 years or over and the resulting certificate is valid as long as there is evidence of annual refresher training. In order to get the best quality of training this course has a maximum of 6 learners to one trainer. In addition to the face-to-face tuition and assessment it’s essential to do your own background reading. Naturally you will be given guidance on where to find information. However, a key principle in your years ahead will be the need for continuing professional development. That may be tutor-led or though careful reflection of incidents which you have experienced. It all helps to minimise the risk of skill decay, leaving you well-prepared for a very wide range of circumstances.
