For those who want to take first aid to a higher level, the next step is our course on First Response Emergency Care, level 3 (FREC 3). Most of our own volunteers are qualified to at least that level. It’s a 5-day course and we normally offer it only to people who are already qualified in First Aid at Work or equivalent. It means that you can provide a better level of care for someone who is injured or ill, particularly if there is a delay in the emergency response. It can also be the first step on a path towards a career in pre-hospital care or related services. By completing this course you will be able to deliver oxygen safely when it is most needed. You will know how to remove a crash helmet without putting the patient at risk. You will also be able to stabilise someone with a spinal injury and help to prevent life-changing complications. You will understand more accurately when someone needs to go to hospital and, if so, how best to get them there. This course is endorsed by the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care, which is part of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The national regulations for this course mean that it is open only to people aged 17 years or over and the resulting certificate is valid for three years. In order to get the best quality of training this course has a maximum of 6 learners to one trainer.
